Welcome to our online course on “What is Local Government?” Our course includes 11 modules. Each module focuses on a specific topic, for example municipal structures and services, the role of a municipal councillor, local government budgets and how to participate in municipal processes in South Africa. Each module starts with a short animated video clip which presents the topic. After watching the video you are invited to complete the multiple choice quiz and test your knowledge. However, these videos were originally developed in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town to upskill municipal and city councillors and to enable and encourage citizens to participate in municipal processes. As such, the terminology used may differ slightly from that used in other provinces. Some of the videos in this course were created in 2016 and should therefore be viewed in the context of that time frame. We try to update the content of the videos as often as possible.
